Description:

A Costumed French Poured Wax Doll, c.1880
The doll features wax head, shoulder plate and arms, composite legs and a cloth body, blue glass eyes and inserted brunette hair. A French hand-made dress comprising corset, bloomers, two petticoats, skirt, blouse, overcoat and coin purse. Handpainted features.

Wax was a popular medium with doll makers between the 17th and 20th Centuries. It allowed for a delicate and sentimental rendering of facial expressions very popular at the time.



PROVENANCE:
From the ancestral collection of a Tasmanian Colonial family.

Once owned by Nellie Payne (1865-1962), renowned Arts and Crafts wood carver. Payne studied at London's Goldsmiths' College from 1900-06, and moved to Tasmania where she worked as a professional wood carver until 1962.
