27 May 2012Rosemary Penrose began dealing in Aboriginal art in 1988. Her Original Dreamtime Gallery was the first privately owned Aboriginal specialist gallery to open in Alice Springs NT.
Rosemary worked closely for many years with Clifford Possom Tjapaltjarri, Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri, Maxie Tjampatjinpa, Long Jack Phillipus and many other recognized artists from Papunya,Yuendumu, Kintore and Utopia. She spent long periods of time with the desert artists researching and travelling great distances to remote settlements.
The outstations of Manangrida, Oenpelli, Yirrikala and the Tiwi Islands were accessed by plane. In 1992 Rosemary opened another gallery in Cairns, and then in the early 2000s ‘Ancient Earth Indigenous Art’ Gallery was established.
Cameron Shave was a partner in Katherine Art Gallery in the early 1990s and worked closely with the Warlpiri people of Lajamanu people including such important artists as Lorna Fencer, Abie Jangala and Lily Hargraves. Other artists he befriended and worked with included National Aboriginal art award winner Paddy Fordham Wainburranga and the bark painter, Lofty Nabarrayal. Shave retired from the Aboriginal art industry in the late 1990s.
